Al Bergstrom, founder of Al's Breakfast in 1950, has passed away. Al's Breakfast was opened on May 15th, 1950 after Al got into a "dispute" with the owners of the Flying Dutchman, a restaurant Al had been working at across the street. The place has been the same for the past 53 years, with it's original occupancy of 14 seats and a whopping width of 10 feet. Al may have retired in late 1973, handing ownership of Al's over to current owners Doug Grinas and Jim Brandes, but the restaurant has always been his. The pancake, waffle and hollandaise recipes are the same one's Al came up with over fifty years ago. The style of cooking and atmosphere has been a mainstay of Al's since it's opening. though the breakfast of champions staff have never held a breakfast at Al's, they'd like to take a moment of your time to pay tribute to a fellow breakfast champion. "It's an old-fashioned business," Grina said. "We run it the way Al ran it." no official breakfast will be held this weekend. |
